On 11th January, Sushma Swaraj made an angry tweet post seeing doormats with Indian flags printed on them available on Amazon Canada website. Though there is no official reply from Amazon canada or its indian subsidiaries, Sushma Swaraj’s tweet has sure alarmed many ears.
She reacted after a Twitter user sent her a screen-grab of doormats featuring the flag on sale on Amazon Canada.
The offending products were on offer by two vendors. Under India’s law, any desecration of the flag is punishable with fines and imprisonment.
Sushma Swaraj tweeted to the Indian High Commission in Canada regarding this:
A representative for Amazon said in an email to Reuters, “The thing is no longer accessible available to be purchased on the site”. No formal expression of remorse has originated from the online retailer.
After few hours of this, the products were removed from the website’s catalog and the page returned ‘Page Not Found’ error on reloading.
